Books We Are Reading This Week – July 21, 2015

July 22 2015 Books we are Reading

We love to read as a family. We make sure to take time each night to read a couple of stories before bed. Our time spent reading are some of my favorite times of the day. All the electronics are put away and it is our time to all sit together and get lost in stories together.

I thought it might be nice to take some time each week and share with you some of the books that we have enjoyed.

Beach Day is a great picture book for summer. The excitement of a day at the beach is captured with great rhymes and pictures that beautifully compliment the story. The kids were definitely ready for their own beach day after reading this one!

Miss Rumphius is a beautiful Caldecott winning story about a young child who while sitting on her grandfather’s knee one evening decides what she wants to do in her life. We follow along and watch as she makes her dreams come true. This is a great story with a great message that I am glad to have shared with my children.

Machines at Workis a great book that takes you through a day at a construction site. As with the other books that we have read by Byron Barton, the kids were really drawn to the bright and bold illustrations.

Waiting for the Biblioburrois the story of a young girl who loves to read but has limited access to books in her small village. One morning she wakes up to find that a traveling library being carried on the backs of two burros has arrived in her village. It is inspired by the real-life efforts of librarian Luis Soriano. The kids enjoyed the story but I think they enjoyed listening to Mom & Dad trying to pronounce some of the Spanish words that were sprinkled throughout the story even more!

Finally, Rosie Revere, Engineer, this has to be one of my favorite books that we have read in a LONG time. It is a great story with an even better message. We meet Rosie who loves inventing things. She dreams of one day becoming an Engineer. After being laughed at by her uncle for whom she had made a special invention she starts to doubt herself. Following along on her journey back to realizing her dream is so enjoyable and just the kind of message I want to share with my children.
